Picture Jasper is formed when petrified mud that drips into molten lava gas pockets. When the mixture becomes superheated and cooled, it forms these unique patterns. Many people believe that they resemble picturesque landscapes like valleys or mountains, hence where it derives its name. This type of Jasper is found in the Western United States in California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Washington.
